A brief explanation of homoeopathy

/by
Homoeopathy has been used for 200 years in most countries around the world. It is used extensively by doctors, as well as practitioners of natural medicine. It is unfortunate that in Australia the local medical community has resisted its widespread use, although this is sure to change as they are brought up to date with their medical colleagues overseas. Homoeopathy was founded by a German doctor, Dr Samuel Hahnemann, who was a brilliant physician and pharmacist. Because of his fluency in seven languages, he was able to read healing texts from all communities and all ages. He was the first physician to make full practical use of a Law of Nature known to ancient healers such as Hippocrates. This was the Law of Similars, which states that a substance that is capable of causing a group of symptoms in a healthy person is capable of removing a group of similar symptoms in an unwell person. Dr Hahnemann realised the value of this law when he was translating a book of medicines from English into German. He disagreed with the author’s description of the effects of overdoses of Peruvian Bark, a herb which was used in the treatment of malarial fevers. Dr Hahnemann, being a true scientist, experimented by taking small doses of the bark and found that he developed a fever that is very similar to a malarial fever. The fever stopped when he stopped taking the bark. He took some more, and the fever started again. It stopped soon after he stopped taking...

Starvation as a clinical condition

Starvation is normally associated with undernutrition in third world countries or economically deprived conditions. However, there are many situations in the more affluent world which are essentially starvation conditions. The most obvious starvation situations are the eating disorders anorexia nervosa, bulimia and prolonged or inappropriate dieting. Other conditions include malabsorption diseases such as coeliac disease and lactose intolerance; infections; diarrhoea; and cachexia in cancer. Perhaps the most insidious, however, is prolonged dieting for weight loss or control. In prolonged dieting, when you reduce caloric intake the body has insufficient caloric intake to meet normal demands and goes into starvation mode, with the consequent reduction in BMR (basal metabolic rate). This results in an even lower caloric intake being required for weight loss. Physiological effects of prolonged starvation include: * Blood pressure drops, especially when standing, exacerbating the impairment of body functions through inefficient blood flow * Wasting of cardiac muscle, which can lead to heart failure * Impairment of skeletal muscular function * Wasting of respiratory muscles, which leads to breathing problems and exacerbates the problem of oxygen supply due to poor blood flow * Increased susceptibility of body to infection due to protein shortages * Impairment of body temperature regulation Starvation and malnutrition are obstacles to any cure, so treat yourself with...

Homeopathics and Nosebleeds

A 10 year old boy is brought to me by his mother with chronic nose bleeds. I ask some pertinent questions…Does he pick his nose? Is he being bullied at school? I also want to check his Bioflavanoid intake to see if there is Vitamin C deficiency. On examination, I identify the bleeding source from the antero-inferior part of the nasal septum. The likely cause of these nose bleeds are that the child is picking his nose. A dry climate or heated indoor air irritates and dries out nasal membranes, causing crusts that may itch and then bleed when scratched or picked. Some other possible causes of epistaxis in children are: being bullied or beaten up, and Vasodilation. Vitamin C deficiency causes fragile capillaries and cell membrane fragility, causing vasodilation of capillaries, and therefore nosebleeds. If the nosebleeds do not stop with this treatment, you need to put your head DOWN (not up, as in some urban myths dictate), and pinch the bridge of your nose….and if it still continues to persist, you can pack it up with cotton wool, or even a tampon would be handy! A Homeopathic remedy for nosebleeds is: Phosphorus Phosphorus is chemically prepared from bone-acid (phosphoric acid) by distillation with charcoal. It is remarkable for its easy spontaneous combustion. How entirely medicinal substances, by potentising through trituration and succussion (which were first used by Homeopathy), are removed out of their chemical sphere, may be seen, among other things. A powder of sugar of milk containing one or two pellets moistened...

Beautiful Skin & Complexion with Homeopathy

A healthy life produces a healthy skin and an unhealthy life produces an unhealthy skin, and no tricks of manufacturers and shop keepers will help to improve matters. There are of course medicines which are helpful in improving the condition of the skin and complexion. They do not act directly on the skin, but by improving the bodily disorder which has caused the deterioration of the skin. When all the skin washes, skin ointments, and skin treatments have utterly failed, the homeopath will try a few doses of Sulphur or Arsenicum, or whatever may be needed by the suffering body will improve the general health, and with the general health, the skin. The idea that the skin can be improved by outward applications is of course held by specialists in skin diseases and dermatologists. As the diseases and disorders of the skin are hardly ever restricted to the skin itself, but come from within the body, these disorders and diseases must be treated from within. Outward treatments can only do mischief by depriving the body of a much needed outlet and driving the trouble inside. If the skin disease is “cured” by the outward treatment, the individual is of course not cured, but the evidence of his/her internal disorder is merely suppressed, and the body promptly finds an outlet for the disease matter in an internal organ (to the great distress of the sufferer). A suppressed skin disease frequently leads to asthma, and the asthma can be treated only be re-establishing the...

Vaccination: Your informed choice

It’s one of the hardest choices we have. Vaccination is not compulsory in Australia, in fact, it is not only the privilege, but the right of any parent to choose whether they vaccinate their children or not. I urge you, however, to make this decision on an informed choice basis, and then just as importantly to stand by your decision! The Australian Council for Immunisation gives us both Pro’s and Con’s for this topic, and a recommended reading list. A great website to go to if you’re still unsure of what path to take. If you do decide to vaccinate, there are Homeopathic remedies that can be administered the night after the vaccination, which are known to reduce the chance of any immediate or long term side effects. Another option you may choose is to employ a Homeopathic Prophylaxis as an alternative to the conventional vaccination, or use a combination of both these methods – vaccinating conventionally for only some diseases and not others, and using some Homeopathic prophylaxis medicines for some diseases and not others. To fully understand how Homeopathic Prophylaxis works, it is important to comprehend the principles and practice of Homeopathy itself. You will need to consult a fully qualified Homeopath before proceeding with a Prophylaxis for your child in order to fully comprehend the concept of it and that of Homeopathy. Today’s Tip: Do not base your decision to vaccinate on Fear. Base it on facts! Remember Vaccination is your informed...

Homeopathy’s First Aid Remedies

Homeopathic First Aid Remedies are for Acute Cases. Intense acute conditions need to be monitored frequently, with a review every 15 minutes to half hour. There should be a big turn around within 5 doses; if there is no change at all, it’s the wrong remedy. For mild acute conditions we don’t need to monitor as frequently. Here is a list of remedies with abbreviations: Note: Potencies are given at the 30c – Aconite Napellis (Acon 30), Arsenicum Album (Ars 30), Apis Mellifica (Apis 30), Arnica (Arn 30), Belladonna (Bell 30), Bryonia Alba (Bry 30), Chamomilla (Cham 30), Cantharis (Canth 30), Euphrasia (Euph 30), Gelsemium (Gels 30), Hepar Sulphuricum (Hep S 30), Hypericum Perforatum (Hyper 30), Ledum (Led 30), Mercury (Merc 30), Nux Vomica (Nux V 30), Pulsatilla (Puls 30), Rhus Toxicodendron (Rhus t 30), Ruta Graviolens (Ruta 30), Staphysagria (Staph 30), Symphytum (Symph 12) Some notes on Hypericum: Common Name: St. Johns Wort – Hypericum is an injury remedy, especially for injuries to the nerves and spine. It is the Arnica of the nerves. The hallmark of Hypericum is the sharp and shooting quality of the pains. This remedy may help to prevent tetanus. Hypericum is made from the plant Deciduous, the perennial herb, found in Europe, North America and other countries, and grows in open woods and hedge banks. The affinity of the plant is essentially with  the nervous system. It acts on the nerve sheaths and the nerve endings giving rise to stitching and tearing pains and crawling sensations…. Cocculus Indicus’ and Jet Lag

A tincture is prepared from the powdered seeds, which contain a crystallisable principle Picrotoxine, a powerful poison. The homeopathic form is curative for the affections from loss of sleep, and seasickness. Cocculus has been used from ancient times as a poison for stupefying fish, and making them easy to catch. Correspondingly we find it produces great disturbance of the sensorium in human beings, and all the symptoms of intoxication. It is commonly used as an adulteration of beer to heighten its intoxicating properties. A very characteristic symptom is a sensation of hollowness or emptiness in the head or other parts. Allied to this is  a sense of lightness of body. Along with these, there is vertigo, nausea and vomiting which bring it into close relation with seasickness and carriage-sickness. Cocculus responds perfectly to the sensitive condition caused by loss of sleep and night-watching (Jet Lag), an irritable weakness caused by prolonged loss of sleep, and is the first remedy to think of for removing this. Cocculus characteristics are weak, with a nervous temperament; light-haired females, especially those suffering from uterine complaints or menstrual difficulties, or troubles during pregnancy. There is a sensation of hollowness, laxness of muscles, and shuddering in general. This is perhaps one of the oldest homeopathic remedies in seasickness. Great nausea is one of its characteristics symptoms; it is provoked by motion, change of posture and especially from riding in a car or boat. This nausea is accompanied by vertigo, with a tendency to faint. Please, as always, get homeopathic advise...

Caulophyllum

Caulophyllum Thalictroides is a Homeopathic remedy used for the stages of labour in childbirth. When the mother is too exhausted to push, or the contractions are too weak, Caulophyllum is most helpful. Another common name for Caulophyllum is Blue Cohosh. A tincture is prepared from the fresh root of Caulophyllum thalictroides, the blue cohosh). A potency of 200c can be given to break the waters, or a potency of 6c is generally given to help the labour progress. Two general effects of this medicine are prominent: 1) on the uterus, causing labour-like pains; 2) on the small joints, causing pain, soreness and swelling. Clinical: Labour pains are weak, they do not press downward, but pass off with a kind of shivering. Caulophyllum is useful in false, annoying pains a few weeks before the time of labour. It is suited to chilly, nervous women especially if with “moth patches” (Melasma) on forehead (as seen in the homeopathic remedy Sepia). This is a woman’s remedy – for want of tonicity of the womb and useful during labour, when the pains are deficient and the patient is exhausted and fretful. It also has a special affinity for the smaller joints. There is thrush, locally and internally. Note: Caulophyllum Thalictroides is strongly antidoted by coffee. (Homeopathic:...

Homeopathic Carcinosinum

The homeopathic remedy Carcinosinum, also called Carcinosin, is made from breast cancer tissue. It is a homeopathic nosode and shows a picture of cancer miasm – said to be an equal proportion of the 3 miasms mixed……the stubbornness of Sycosis, weakness of Psora, and destruction of luetic. Patients fitting the description of this remedy have an appearance of pale or coffee coloured skin. The Schlera are blue, and there is grimacing or constant blinking of the eyes. Lots of moles, naevi, especially black macules (discoloured skin spot, as opposed to papule), and inverted nipples. There is a high incidence of Cancer, Tuberculosis, Diabetes, leukaemia, and Pernicious Anaemia throughout the family. Carc patients may have had severe incidences of Whooping Cough, Croup, Glandular Fever, Pneumonia, Rheumatic Fever, Bronchitis, All pox diseases, Anorexia Nervosa, Herpes I and II, Vaccinations, and “Never well since” especially where there is a strong reaction of it didn’t take. The mental picture is that of Perfectionism. Dr Rajan Sankaran, consulting Homeopath and an eminent teacher of classical homeopathy, says “The situation of Carc is that of a child with a strict upbringing. The parents insist that the child should be perfect. These children have good manners, they behave themselves and are not mischievous. The Carc person is heavily controlled by the person on whom he depends.” “They are very conscious of good taste and desire perfection in everything. Being neat and clean is not enough – it must be perfect – they are neurotic about it”. So it’s about what other...
